Ibibios are said to have passed through Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, Central Africa, Cameroon before finally settling in Ibom, now Arochukwu in Abia State. The Ibibio worshipped the Sun-Moon god, Ra;practiced circumcision, obeserved 8-day weeks, 12-13-month years, offered sacrifices, maintained an Axe Deity, erected totems and monuments for sun worship, maintained Egyptian-styled burial practices, engaged in magic and sorcery, mysticism, astronomy, etc. The Ibibios have words with exact same meanings in Hebrew as well as ancient Egyptian tongues. The Ibibio Kingdom of Obong Okon Ita extended as far as present day Imo State and after losing their original territory in the Aro-Ibibio War, most of the Ibibio communities were absorbed into the emerging Igbo-dominated Aro Confederacy. That explains one of the reasons why Aros are indeed a mixture of Ibibio, Igbo and Akpa (Ekoi). The deities of Arochukwu pantheon are ALL of Ibibio origin. Ibit Itam, now known as Ibit Ukpabi was the principal oracle----the law giver. Ibit means Drum. Itam means Crown or headgear. Ibit Itam simply means Drum of the Sovereign Crown. Akpabio means First Nation. Akpa means First. Obio means Nation. so IBIT AKPABIO means Drum of the First Nation. Akpabio was corrupted to UKPABIO and later, UKPABI by the migrating Aro-Igbo. The Ibibio Ibit Itam oracle had a community of drummers who duty was to call people to service. They were called Mme M'bit Ibit Itam, based in Itu. They had the Seers and Idiong priests. My late grandfather talked about the curse our ancestors placed on the invading Aro-Igbo for defiling their oracle. According to him, the curse was placed after the Ibibio priests had stripped the oracle of its secrets and mystics, thereby rendering it less potent. It also involved the spilling of blood and the destruction of those who initiated the desecration of the shrines. He said the British destruction of Arochukwu was indeed one of the unending manifestations of that curse. Some communities fight for their traditions to the point of death and trying to lure them to change their lifestyles is vanity. These traditions are not bad as such because some help in identifying the origins of people.
